United States

New Forests currently co-manages The Eco Products Fund, which invests in forest carbon and mitigation/conservation banking markets in the US. We also manage specialized forest carbon projects as separate transactions for clients.

The US has been a pioneer in the development of regulatory environmental markets for biodiversity, carbon and water. While these markets are generally regional or piecemeal, there remains a variety of significant investment opportunities. Regulated markets for the conservation of threatened species and the mitigation of wetland impacts, under the Endangered Species Act and the Clean Water Act, represent a growing biodiversity-based asset class with reported turnover exceeding US$1 billion per year. Existing legislation in California and the Northeast, as well as pending legislation in the US Congress, suggests a multi-billion dollar US carbon market may also be on the horizon. New Forests is working with entities facing greenhouse gas regulations and with investors to explore early forestry offset credit positions as well as structures for managing carbon policy and market risk. For more details, please see New Forests' discussion of domestic and international forestry offsets credits in proposed US compliance markets and a backgrounder on conservation and mitigation banking.

New Forests also plays an active role in policy development, providing input to the California Forest Project Protocols under the Climate Action Reserve and nationally through industry groups and direct work with NGOs and Congressional staff.
