About New Forests
New Forests manages private equity-style commingled funds and separate accounts for timberland and eco products investments, such as carbon credits, biodiversity credits, mitigation banks and water quality improvements. The company offers three investment strategies that provide clients with diversity and choice around risk-adjusted returns, geography and market exposures:
- Sustainable timberland investment in Australia and New Zealand. With relatively low risk, stable assets and well-established markets and management systems, New Forests adds value by understanding the regional markets and providing upside exposure to emerging environmental markets.
- Growing economies of the Asia Pacific region. Supply-demand imbalances for timber in Asia are acute, and higher risk-adjusted returns can be produced. New Forests adds value by creating access to an exciting high growth market with international timberland investment discipline.
- Direct investment in US eco products. Eco products, such as carbon credits, mitigation banking instruments, water quality trading and biodiversity credits, are an emerging asset class. New Forests creates value for clients via extensive intellectual property, experience and local knowledge of emerging environmental markets.
Products and Services
Currently, New Forests manages $250 million in sustainable timberland and eco product assets in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. In Australia and New Zealand New Forests pursues a “timber plus” strategy of timber plus carbon returns from the acquisition of established plantation properties and reforestation of marginal agricultural lands. In the Asia Pacific, New Forests offers institutional investment products focused on sustainable forestry investment. In the United States, investment products focus on eco products, particularly forest carbon offsets exposed to the emerging U.S. compliance cap-and-trade markets and wetland and threatened species conservation activities exposed to regulated markets under the Endangered Species Act and Clean Water Act.
New Forests provides a full value chain of services, from fund management and portfolio strategy to operational oversight of forest and eco product management, including carbon offset accreditation. The staff includes experienced professionals across general business and finance, timberland investment, operational forestry, eco product development and policy and market research, providing a unique combination of skills supporting our investment strategies. This skill set is leveraged by New Forests’ relationships with landowners, governments, non-governmental organizations and researchers in the countries where we operate.
New Forests also offers Advisory Services to landowners, investors, regulated entities and other institutions interested in environmental markets. Services include project feasibility and design, policy and market analysis, biological and financial modelling and investment strategy. The company is headquartered in Sydney, Australia, with offices in Washington, D.C., San Francisco and Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. New Forests holds an Australian Financial Services Licence.
